Inspired by Japanese Kumiko, this is our humble homage to the utmost care and precision put into the work of Japanese Sashimono masters. The Asanoha motif is believed to bestow health and long life, the multitude of triangles conveying strength and beauty - we agree the pattern is strong and beautiful!
The intricate pattern in each lid is meticulously created using small, perfectly hand-cut pieces of wood, with every angle carefully planed to meet precisely. True to the Japanese craft, they are carefully finished using hand planes to produce a clarity and sheen not achievable through sanding. A protective natural oil and wax is then applied.
Our Kumiko box is available in a choice of walnut, mahogany (sapele) and white oak. The inside and base of the box are lined with maple wood.
